Searches have taken place along the Co Donegal coast for missing kayaker Paul Buchanan.

Searches for a missing kayaker off the Co Donegal coast have been temporarily halted as a result of bad weather.

Gardaí said the searches for Paul Buchanan, from Ramelton, would continue later in the week after they were stopped due to weather conditions.

Mr Buchanan, an accountant in his 50s and originally from Newtowncunningham, was reported missing when he failed to return after setting out in a kayak from Magheragallon pier in Gweedore last Thursday evening.

It was confirmed by the Irish Coast Guard that the multi-agency searches had shifted to a body recovery operation.

The kayak belonging to Mr Buchanan was found almost 5km north of Tory Island last Friday evening.

A prayer service was held on Tuesday evening at St Mary’s Church in Ramelton for Mr Buchanan’s family.

Meanwhile, separate searches have been carried out along the Co Donegal coast after reports of an elderly man entering the sea last Saturday at Lagacurry Beach in the Clonmany area.

A Gardaí spokesperson said a Family Liaison Officer has been appointed for relatives of the missing man, and they have appealed for anyone with information or who saw the man - described as in his 70s and wearing a green heavy jumper, blue collared shirt, navy cords and black boots - to contact them.
