SCOTSTOWN booked their place in the quarter-final of the Monaghan Senior Football Championship when they proved that bit more potent than Truagh in an entertaining if never spectacular game that was played in Emyvale on Sunday (1-13 0-9).
Powered by the Hughes brothers, Darren and Kieran, along with the accuracy of Conor McCarthy and Shane Carey, Scotstown just had too much fire power and were always able to respond any time that Truagh threatened.
A hungrier more clinical Magheracloone proved too strong in most departments for Inniskeen (1-14 to 0-9) in an entertaining Monaghan SFC qualifier game in Drumhowan on Sunday.
It was a victory at a cost though for the Mitchells as they had talisman Tomas Freeman red-carded with eight minutes of normal time remaining which could rule him out of their next outing. His influence is crucial to Magheracloone’s prospects and was yesterday as he finished with seven points, five from frees, but was also the creator of many more.
Castleblayney staged an increasingly effective second-half performance to keep their championship aspirations on track while putting Donaghmoyne out of this year’s competition (2-16 to 2-8) when the sides played out a scrappy affair in Clontibret yesterday.
Castleblayney led at half-time by 0-9 to 1-5, Colm Connolly with the Donaghmoyne goal. Connolly netted again in the early minutes of the second half to restore Donaghmoyne to the lead but a goal for Castleblayney by Brendan McElroy changed the course of the game and Castleblayney built on that to pull away as the Donaghmoyne challenge faded.
