‘Donegal ingenuity’ as pub offers free pints to amateur GAA broadcaster amid TV blackout

Match against Cork a sell-out but there’s no TV coverage

Guinness and Johnnie Walker drinks giant Diageo has cut its outlook once again and slashed the firm’s shareholder dividend payout as new boss Sir Dave Lewis said the group needed to ‘act more decisively’ to boost its flagging performance

A Donegal pub is offering free pints to anyone who can help them stream the crunch clash with Cork on Saturday amid a broadcasting blackout.

Donegal will take on Cork in round 2A of the All-Ireland Football Championship at MacCumhaill Park in Ballybofey this Saturday, June 13. The match is a sell-out, but with no television or official live-stream available.

The Bridge Inn pub in Dungloe has asked for a volunteer attending the game to simply FaceTime the action from their mobile phone, beaming it live to the bar.

And to sweeten the deal for the amateur broadcaster, the creative pub owners are offering free pints of Guinness “for you and a friend, all day Sunday”.

Now, whiskey brand Silkie Whiskey has stepped in with an even sweeter deal: a free match ticket for whoever helps out.

“The fantastic folks at Silkie Whiskey have very kindly donated a ticket for the supporter who helps us stream the match,” the pub announced on social media this week.

And the response has been full on. “We’ve had plenty of interest from people willing to help,” the Bridge Inn said, adding that management now faces the difficult task of choosing just one “match-day hero”.

Requirements are simple: a decent phone signal, a fully charged phone, landscape mode, and a love of helping fellow supporters.

Whoever is selected will enjoy the match with their free ticket, while trying to ensure the pub-goers can watch the match live.

The Bridge Inn has promised to announce its chosen streamer soon, urging followers to stay tuned. The pub also thanked the whiskey brand for backing what the pub called “this bit of Donegal ingenuity”.

“Please share this post and help us find our match-day hero,” the pub added.
