A Co Donegal councillor has warned that a shipwreck made famous by a U2 video could soon fall apart.

Bád Eddie (Eddie’s Boat) has lain on the scenic Magheraclogher Beach in Bunbeg since it first washed up in the 1970s.

The fishing vessel, which was originally called Cara na Mara (friend of the sea), has become a landmark in the west Donegal Gaeltacht and is used in tourism material as well as wedding photographs.

In 1985 it was exposed to a worldwide audience when it featured on the music video for In a Lifetime by U2 and Donegal group Clannad.

In recent years the weather has taken its toll on the shipwreck, which has become so dilapidated that Donegal County Council had to erect signs warning the public not to approach.

It was suggested last year that it could be replaced with a monument.

Independent councillor Micheál Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig said local people feel something should now be done before it is too late.

“As storms get more common and stronger, I image it will give and split. I have thought this year may be the year,” he said.
