ONE of the west Donegal Gaeltacht’s best known hotels could be sold at auction for as little as £500,000.

The Ostan Gweedore, simply known locally as “the Ostan,” goes under the hammer at Allsop auctions in Dublin next month with a reserve price of 590,000 euro (£500,540).

Overlooking Magheraclogher strand and the iconic “Bád Eddie” (Eddie’s Boat) ship wreck, the hotel with its modern white façade is one of the most instantly recognisable in the county.

With 32 bedrooms, the Ostan also has its own leisure centre and is located on a huge 76 acre site just below the village of Bunbeg. The lot also includes six holiday apartments.

A spokeswoman for Allsops auctions said the hotel was built in 1970 with later extension in 1989 and 1992.

“Internally the property provides 32 guest bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, reception, bar, restaurant, kitchen, office, conference and function room, beauty salon and leisure centre with heated pool and gym, ladies and gents WCs, staff and laundry rooms,” she said.

While now in need of refurbishment, the Ostan was once the pride of the west tourism industry and was particularly popular as a wedding venue.

The hotel goes up for auction in Dublin on December 13.
