A TEENAGE boy has drowned while swimming in the River Shannon on the Roscommon-Longford border.

The teenager, believed to be aged 17, drowned at Tarmon Harbour near the village of Termonbarry in Co Roscommon shortly before 5pm on Tuesday.

It is understood he was with friends when he went into the water.

When he got into difficulties, his friends tried to rescue him and several boats also came to help.

However his body was later recovered from the water. A post-mortem is to be carried out at Roscommon University Hospital.

The marina is a popular swimming spot in the area.

Gardaí are investigating the circumstances of the death.
