THE bodies of a couple have been recovered from the River Shannon after they drowned while on holiday in a tragic accident.

The man and woman, who were aged in their 30s, were found at Carrick-on-Shannon in Co Leitrim yesterday afternoon.

Although the couple lived in Germany, it is understood that the man was Irish, with family connections in Co Roscommon, while the woman was English.

The pair had been reported missing to Gardaí yesterday morning, having hired a cruiser to travel on the river earlier in the week.

It has been reported that they may have slipped into the water from the boat.

The man's body was found around 2pm yesterday close to the marina, while the woman's body was recovered later in the afternoon.

Gardaí said last night that the deaths were being treated as accidental and a post-mortem examination is due to be carried out on Monday.
