NINE men have appeared in court after two supermarkets were looted in Dublin during Friday's blizzards.

Social media footage showed a Lidl store being attacked with a digger and an attempt with the bucket of the vehicle to break into a safe.

Gardaí said the supermarket on Fortunestown Lane in Tallaght suffered substantial damage, while a Centra store in nearby Jobstown was also broken into after a saw was used to cut a hole in the front.

Civil defence, army trucks and snowploughs had to be used to bring Garda reinforcements to the scenes.

The shells of several burnt-out cars were also found in the snow following a night of vandalism.

Three of those arrested were remanded in custody while the other six were released on bail to appear again in court later this month.
