AROUND 18,000 people in Northern Ireland are to receive a cold weather payment.

Those who qualify will receive £25 from a total £450,000 pot.

Customers can expect to receive their pay automatically on March 14.

The payment is available when the average temperature is recorded, or is forecast to be zero degrees or below, for a period of seven consecutive days.

This trigger was reached at the Met Office's Thomastown weather station over the seven day period from February 25 until March 3 and at the Castlederg weather station from February 26 to March 4.

The cold weather payments are in addition to the Winter Fuel Payments.
