AN elderly man has died in an accident involving a cow at a farm in south Armagh.

The man was named locally last night as Matt McCoy. He was aged in his 70s and was a well-known part of the farming community in Mullaghbawn.

He was married with one daughter and four grandchildren.

It is understood he died after going to tend to a cow that was calfing at his farm on the Newry Road in Mullaghbawn.

Police said officers were called to the scene on Wednesday shortly after 2pm following a report of a sudden death. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) said it was called to the scene at about 2.20pm.

"One rapid response vehicle paramedic and one emergency ambulance crew were dispatched to the incident," he said.

"The charity air ambulance was also tasked to the scene, but was stood down on route.

"No patients were transported from the scene."

The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland last night said it is working to establish what happened.

Sinn Féin councillor Mickey Larkin said: "This death on a farm in the will have shocked the local Mullaghbawn area and the wider community.

"This man was part of the farming community and we are all affected by such tragedies.

"Any death on a farm is one too many. I send my sympathies to the family and friends of this man at this difficult time."
