A 67-year-old woman has died on a Co Armagh farm after an accident involving a cow.

Tributes were last night paid to cattle breeder Thelma Gorman following the tragedy at Kilcreevy Road close to Armagh city.

Mrs Gorman is understood to have been hit by an animal at around 1.30pm yesterday.

The Northern Ireland Air Ambulance was called to the scene, but she was later pronounced dead.

An investigation has been launched by the Northern Ireland Health and Safety Executive and police are also probing the circumstances.

Mrs Gorman was a successful cattle breeder and was well-known in farming circles.

Ulster Unionist councillor Jim Speers said people have been left shocked by the "absolute tragedy".

"I knew Thelma Gorman and her family well," he said.

"Only last year she won the Unsung Hero Award at the Farming Life and Danske Bank Awards in Belfast which reflected Thelma`s dedication to the community and her caring nature.

"She was a long time stalwart of the Armagh Show and it wouldn't be what it is today without her help and guidance.

"Thelma and her husband Peter also provided valuable respite care for children with learning disabilities.

"This is another tragic example of how dangerous farming can be, but at this moment the community will be focusing on providing sympathy and support to the family."

Mrs Gorman is survived by her husband Peter and family circle.
