THE Louth County Executive is closing in on Ger Brennan to succeed Mickey Harte and Gavin Devlin following the surprise departure of the Tyrone pair to Derry earlier this month.

It is understood Brennan is a firm frontrunner for the ‘Wee’ County post after meeting with county chairman Peter Fitzpatrick, while former Armagh ace John McEntee was also linked to the vacancy.

Brennan was an All-Ireland winner with Dublin and enjoyed a distinguished club career with St Vincent’s in the capital. Hotly tipped to take the Monaghan post at one stage, the move fell apart and ex-Farney defender Vinny Corey was later appointed.

Laois also expressed an interest in Brennan – but it seems Louth will win the race.

Harte and Devlin’s departures after three successful seasons with the Leinster minnows was a bolt from the blue.

The Tyrone duo guided Louth to back-to-back promotions in the National League and were just one win away from breaching the top flight. Louth also reached their first Leinster final in 13 years under the pair.

Days afterwards, Louth captain Sam Mulroy stressed the positives of where the senior footballers were at and believed they can push under the next manager.

“We’re not sitting in Division Four anymore,” said Mulroy, “we made our first Leinster final appearance in years and someone looking at it will be thinking that that is a nice position to be going into.

“I’ve been speaking to a few boys over the last few days now and they’re excited about what will come of this, so it’s getting over that shock and disappointment and turning it into a serious positive.”
