JASON Quigley’s challenge for the WBO middleweight title ended in disappointment when he was stopped by Demetrius Andrade with 24 seconds remaining in the second round in Manchester, New Hampshire.
The Ballybofey native was unable to get a foothold in the fight and, after an uncertain start, he was dropped two minutes into the first after ‘Boo Boo’ had caught him clean with a right hook.
At the end of round Wayne McCullough, deputising for Andy Lee in the corner, scolded Quigley for “standing off him”.
“You can’t stand back, you’ve gotta keep your hands up,” said McCullough.
McCullough instructed his fighter to move to Andrade’s left but he was soon in trouble again and unable to escape from the American’s long range whiplash punching power. Ireland’s challenger continued to stand off, looking for the right hand counter but his reactive tactics didn’t pay off and Andrade had him down again with a stunning straight left hand two minutes in.
Andrade jumped up on the ropes to celebrate, thinking the fight was over, but Quigley bravely got back to his feet. The fight was gone from him gone though and wild but effective Andrade wasted no time in finishing him off.
The biggest disappointment for Quigley is that he froze on the biggest stage of his career and rarely let his hands go . He promised to give Andrade "one hell of a night" but he came and went without showing what he is capable of.
Meanwhile, Andrade now plans to snare one of boxing’s global superstars.
“I did what I said I would do, I looked good and felt good,” he said.
“I delivered a message tonight – what’s next and who’s next.
“Every time I get in the ring, I do something different, and I can do it all, and whatever I need. Patience. So many times, you see people get knocked down and then they knock the other guy down. So, I keep patient in there and wait for the shots to land. But you asked for KOs, and I give you KOs so let’s go.
“I’m 31-0, Olympian and World champion, so what more do I need to do?”
