2020 Donegal SFC final: Naomh Conaill v Kilcar (today, Ballybofey, 8pm)

There is a view that if Naomh Conaill can contain Paddy McBrearty and the gifted McHugh clan, then they will have one hand on the Dr Maguire Cup after a most low-key build up to the final.

That would be a tad unfair on Kilcar who are by no means overly reliant on those players.

But there is equally no doubt that this quartet are vital for them and will certainly ask some serious questions of an exceptionally strong Naomh Conaill squad.

The news that their ace forward Eoghan McGettigan is ruled out through injury is a big blow to Naomh Conaill.

But such is the strength in depth of their squad that they will absorb it and just carry on.

On the plus side for them, the return of Ciaran Brennan and Kieran Gallagher really strengthens their hands especially in the physical stakes.

And there is no doubt that the Naomh Conaill men have an exceptionally strong bench by any standards.

The biggest headache Martin Regan will have will be deciding on his starting 15.

For he has at least 10 others who would make any other club team in the county.

That is a huge bonus going into a county final.

Leo McLoone remains a great leader while Anthony Thompson, Eoin Wade, Brendan McDyer, Dermot Molloy, Marty Boyle and AJ Gallagher are vastly experienced.

Add in county star Ciaran Thompson, the three Dohertys from Fintown, the elegant Ethan O’Donnell and you get a good idea of their immense quality.

Kilcar are star-studded too, with Ryan, Mark and Eoin McHugh, Patrick and Stephen McBrearty, Ciaran McGinley, Conor Doherty Andrew McClean and Matthew McClean all top performers.

They also have the graceful ageless Michael Hegarty as well as the force of nature that is Conor McShane.

Both of these teams know each other inside out so there will be no surprises.

My guess is that it will be pretty cagey for long periods with both sides patiently probing like a dentist to locate the weak spot and drive home that advantage.

Hopefully it will not be like the 2017 final which was a real snoozefest.

But Kilcar then showed their true quality in the Ulster Club Championship, brilliantly led by Patrick McBrearty.

And he could have a big say again.

Naomh Conaill are pretty hot favourites and for Kilcar to have any real chance, they must go for the jugular from the start and not allow Glenties to settle into any rhythm.

Kilcar do have savage pace breaking from deep and might just have an edge in the speed stakes.

But they are not as strong as the reigning champions are in terms of strength on the bench.

And Naomh Conaill just have that little bit extra power and strength in reserve to see them through.

And they will be extra keen to win it for the late great Glenties snapper Michael 'Jack' O’Donnell who had planned to hand in his camera after this county final.
