On This Day - February 12 1945: Dublin football legend Jimmy Keaveney was born

Jimmy Keaveney played for Dublin for 16 seasons, from 1964 to 1980. During an illustrious career with the Metropolitans, the St Vincent's player won three All-Ireland medals, in 1974, 1975 and 1976. 1861: Football teams from the neighbouring Sheffield and Hallam clubs met at Sheffield to play the first inter-club match.

2004: Malcolm Glazer increased his Manchester United plc stakeholding to 16.31 percent. The American tycoon bought a controlling stake in the club in May 2005.

2008: Dwain Chambers won his battle to be part of the British team at the World Indoor Championships in Valencia, even though the UK Athletics selection committee were "unanimous in their desire not to select him". He went on to win a silver medal in the 60 metres.

2010: The International Olympic Committee confirmed the death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili in a training accident at the Winter Games in Vancouver.

2012: Liverpool striker Luis Suarez apologised for not shaking Manchester United defender Patrice Evra's hand before the match on the previous day at Old Trafford. Suarez had been banned for eight games after being found guilty of racially abusing Evra in October 2011.

2013: Andy Hunt resigned as chief executive of the British Olympic Association.

2013: Wrestling was dropped as a sport from the 2020 Games by the International Olympic Committee's executive board.
