On this day, July 6, 2013: Ryan Bell helped Derry defeat Down in qualifiers

ON THIS DAY IN SPORT



1907: Brooklands, the world's first purpose-built motor racing track, was opened. The circuit was built as a result of a ban on racing on Britain's roads.



1907: Tom Reece completed the highest-ever billiards break of 499,135 - which he began on June 3. This was in the days of the now-outlawed 'cradle cannon' whereby a player could push the two object balls around the table all day by making a cannon each time.



1957: Althea Gibson of the United States became the first black Wimbledon tennis champion when she beat Darlene Hard to win the women's singles title.



2000: England were eliminated from the race to host the 2006 World Cup as Germany were awarded the tournament, edging out South Africa by a single vote in a meeting of the FIFA delegates in Zurich.



2002: Kerry eased past Fermanagh in the Qualifiers on a 2-15 to 0-4 scoreline.

2006: England captain Michael Vaughan was ruled out of the Ashes series in Australia due to a knee injury.



2008: A goal from Michael Cussen helped Cork to a Munster final win over rivals Kerry.



2010: South African Caster Semenya was given the all-clear to return to athletics. The world 800m champion had been sidelined for 11 months after undergoing gender tests following her win in Berlin.



2012: Andy Murray beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3 6-4 3-6 7-5 to reach the Wimbledon men's singles final, becoming the first Briton to do so since Bunny Austin in 1938. The Scot lost in the final to Federer.

2013: Six points from Ryan Bell helped Derry to a 0-13 to 1-5 Qualifier win over Down at Celtic Park.



2014: Kerry recorded a double-scores – 0-24 to 0-12 – win over Cork to claim the Munster title.
