Derry man dies in Donegal hillwalking accident

Victim named locally as Brian Campbell sustained fatal injuries in a fall

A man who died in a hillwalking accident in Co Donegal at the weekend has been named locally as Brian Campbell from Derry.

Mr Campbell, who was in his 50s and originally from the city’s Creggan area, died following a fall while walking in the Poison Glen at Dunlewey with a friend on Saturday afternoon.

The second hiker, a man also in his 50s, and was also injured. He was airlifted to Letterkenny University Hospital where his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Stretching from the foot of Mount Errigal towards Co Donegal’s west coast, Dunlewey and the scenic Poison Glen are hugely popular with tourists and hillwalkers.



Gardaí and other emergency services were called out at 1pm on Saturday.

Mr Campbell is understood to have sustained fatal injuries in a fall. His body was removed to Letterkenny University Hospital where a post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out.
