Austin Hunter was a hugely respected figure in the field of journalism and communications and there will be enormous regret over his tragic death in a road accident in Bahrain.

Mr Hunter brought authority and integrity to all his roles, but, as he acknowledged after his retirement as editor of the News Letter, he would probably look back with most pride on his time with the historic Belfast-based daily.

He was also a well regarded reporter with both the BBC and a number of weekly newspapers, as well as heading the police press office during a crucial period and advising other prominent bodies on their media strategy.

Mr Austin additionally found the time to encourage young journalists throughout his long career, and deep sympathies will be extended to his family in the difficult days ahead.
