DONEGAL Airport has been voted the most scenic in the world for the third year in a row.

In a poll by travel company, PrivateFly, the airport at Carrickfinn Strand near Annagry beat some of the most spectacular locations in the world, including Skiathos Airport in Greece, Orlando International Airport in Florida and Msembe Airstrip in Tanzania. The Gaeltacht airport come out top over 73 other airports worldwide.

PrivateFly said Donegal won out for the spectacular views greeting travellers on landing and take-off. On the edge of Carrickfin Strand, the airport’s runway extends out towards the Atlantic Ocean. Aircraft using the airport have clear views of the rugged Donegal coastline and off-shore islands as well as the Blue Stack Mountains, the Poisoned Glen and Mount Errigal.

PrivateFly said voters described views from the airport as “stunning and spectacular”.

One voter said: “You can see all the islands, beautiful beaches, Errigal and the Rosses on the approach. Truly wild Atlantic way. It’s just the most wonderful scenery in the world.”

Another said: “You sweep out over an emerald sea with the perma-white froth of the Wild Atlantic Way lashing the many tiny rocky islands in a turquoise sea.”
