Police are treating an attack in which a woman was spat on and struck in the face by two men as a sectarian hate crime.

The woman, who was in her 60s, was attacked by Society Street in Derry city centre around 1am on Sunday. A PSNI spokeswoman said police were determined to eradicate such attacks.

The spokeswoman said: “This was a disgusting and nasty assault which caused great upset and distress to the victim. This is being treated as a sectarian hate crime and our inquiries into this despicable assault are ongoing.”

Derry Sinn Féin councillor, Aisling Hutton called on anyone with information about the assault to pass it on to police.

“The vicious attack on a woman at Society Street on Sunday was disgraceful and I strongly condemn it,” she said.
