POLICE are appealing for information after an 81-year-old male pedestrian died following a collision in Ballymena.

The incident happened in the Wakehurst Road/Queen Street area of the Co Antrim town on Saturday at around 7pm.

The road was closed, with police initially describing the incident as a "serious traffic collision", before it reopened to motorists on Sunday morning.

Police have described the deceased as a pedestrian and have appealed for information over his "sudden death".

"Enquiries remain ongoing and anyone with information, CCTV or dash-cam footage that could assist with our investigation is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 1453 of 05/08/23," a PSNI spokesperson said.

Ballymena independent councilor Rodney Quigley said: "This is a very sad incident and my thoughts are with the man's family. I would urge anyone who can assist the police in their investigation, including witnesses or anyone with footage, to contact them."

Meanwhile, an investigation is underway in Co Donegal after a 19-year-old man died following a collision in the early hours of Saturday.

Conor McGinley, from the Milford area, died after the car he was driving struck a pole in the Kerrykeel area at around 3.30am. A passenger in the vehicle was treated for non-life threatening injuries and Gardaí have appealed for those with information on th crash to contact them.
