Three people will appear in court charged in connection with the seizure of marijuana with an estimated street value of £1m at Belfast Harbour last year.

A man, 39, was arrested in Newry and a large quantity of tobacco was seized.

A woman, aged 33, and a 39-year-old man were also arrested in England.

They are charged with the supply of a Class  B controlled drug and due to appear before Belfast Magistrates Court on August 22.

Detectives from the PSNI's Organised Crime Unit carried out searches of properties in Newry and England as part of an ongoing investigation into the importation of drugs.

In December last year, members of the unit, supported by Border Force and Belfast Harbour Police, discovered the estimated £1m worth of marijuana, or herbal cannabis, vacuum packed and concealed in divan beds.

A 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a class-B controlled drug and possession of a class-B controlled drug with intent to supply.
