West Belfast boy Dáithí Mac Gabhann and his family have arrived in England for surgery that they hope will see him return to the transplant waiting list.

The six-year-old, whose story and life was central to the passing of opt-out transplant legislation in Northern Ireland, flew to Newcastle where a medical team will install a cardiac catheter.

His father, Máirtin, revealed last month the family were devastated when told the young boy was to be temporarily taken off the waiting list due to issues that would mean transplant surgery would be too risky.

Dáithi, born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, has been on the heart transplant waiting list since 2018.

"Dáithí will travel to Newcastle on Wednesday and undergo a cardiac catheter on Thursday, which will hopefully get him back active on the heart transplant waiting list," the family said in a social media post.

They added: "All positive thoughts and prayers welcome".
