POLICE investigating allegations of ill-treatment of patients at Muckamore Abbey Hospital have arrested a 60-year-old man.

The man was detained in the Antrim area on Wednesday.

It brings the total number of people arrested in connection with the investigation into Muckamore Abbey to 38.

Last week saw two men, aged 41 and 51, arrested in the Antrim area as part of the probe.

The Antrim hospital, which treats adults with severe learning difficulties, is operated by the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust and is at the centre of an ongoing major public inquiry into the alleged abuse of patients.

The police investigation onto the allegations of abuse is the biggest criminal probe of its kind in the north's history.

A PSNI spokesperson said the man arrested on Wednesday has since been released pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service.
