POLICE investigating allegations of the ill-treatment of patients at Muckamore Abbey Hospital have arrested a 51-year-old man.

The man was detained in the Antrim area on Monday.

The number of people to have been arrested as part of the police probe now stands at 36.

Monday's arrest follows a 41-year-old man being detained in the Antrim area last Thursday.

The investigation onto Muckamore Abbey Hospital - which is in Antrim and operated by the Belfast Health Trust - began in 2017 following allegations relating to the treatment of patients with learning difficulties.

The probe is the biggest criminal investigation of its kind in Northern Ireland, and the hospital is the focus of a major public inquiry.
