A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of RUC officer Michael Ferguson in Derry in 1993.

Detectives from the PSNI's Legacy Investigation Branch have detained a 51-year-old suspect under the Terrorism Act.

He’s being questioned at the Serious Crime Suite at Musgrave Police Station.

Constable Michael Ferguson (21) from Omagh was shot twice in the back of the head by the IRA while on duty in Shipquay Street on January 23, 1993.

A lone gunman approached him from behind after he and two officers were called to the Richmond shopping centre following a reported theft from a shop.

The Catholic policeman was taken to Altnagevlin Hospital but died from his injuries.

One man was jailed in connection for 'assisting' in the killing but the gunman was never caught.

A PSNI spokesperson said: ''Detectives from PSNI Legacy Investigation Branch, investigating the murder of police officer Michael Ferguson in January 1993, have today arrested a man in Derry/Londonderry as part of their ongoing enquiries into the killing.
