A PLAY park in west Belfast has been closed following "totally unacceptable" anti-social behaviour.

The park at Springfield Avenue was closed by Belfast City Council to facilitate emergency repairs.

The closure came after residents in the area had complained about anti-social behaviour at the facility including bottles and other items being thrown over the playground wall into adjoining homes.

One parent who took to Facebook to raise concerns said she had taken her two sons last week. The woman said teenagers were smoking and swearing and she was verbally abused when she asked them to move to allow her children to use the facilities.

Another woman said she witnessed young people breaking the play equipment.

Clonard Residents Association said it had received complaints from residents in relation to the park.

Sean Murray, chairman of the association, said they were "actively" working with Community Restorative Justice (CRJ) to identify those responsible and contact their parents.

"We call on parents to accept responsibility. It is affecting the quality of life," he said.

"We fought for this facility for 20 years and now we are closing it. It is just crazy. We are angry. It is so unfair to the vast majority who enjoy the facility."

A spokeswoman for Belfast city council said it is "aware of the recent damage caused" at the facility and as a result "it has been necessary to close the park until emergency repair work can take place.

"Council continues to work in partnership with the local community and statutory agencies to address anti-social behaviour and we would appeal to the public to report any incidences of anti-social behaviour or vandalism to the police as well as our parks team," she said.
