A man's knee was sliced with a machete during an attack by masked men in north Belfast.

The living room windows of a house on Forthriver Road were smashed at around 2.45am yesterday.

When a woman living in the house went outside, she was confronted by masked men armed with a baseball bat and a machete.

A man in the house ran off and was chased by the masked men along Forthriver Link.

The victim was attacked with the machete, causing a deep wound to his knee.

A police spokesman said: "This was a vicious attack. And while a man has been left wounded, the consequences, worryingly, could have been even more devastating."

He appealed to anyone with information to contact police on 101.
