POLICE are investigating a link between a series of burglaries and car thefts in Co Down over the weekend.

A 20-year-old woman who was arrested remained in police custody yesterday.

The first incident was reported at 8pm on Saturday when power tools were stolen from a building site at Carnreagh Road in Hillsborough.

A man and woman in the area were seen acting suspiciously.

An hour later, a Renault Megane arrived at a farmyard in Castlevennon Road, Banbridge where power tools from a storeroom. A man gained access to a silver Mitsubishi style truck which he drove off in while the woman left in the Megane.

Police later stopped the Megane on the Old Ballynahinch Road, Lisburn, and arrested the driver on suspicion of theft of vehicle, theft from vehicle, driving when unfit through drink or drugs and burglary.

The man made on foot after crashing into the fence of a property in Cedar Hill, Ballynahinch.

Some hours later a red Toyota Yaris was stolen from the Belfast Road area of Ballynahinch after keys were taken from the property, along with a handbag and a purse.

The car was stopped by police on the A1 at Sheepbridge in Newry following the incident which was reported at around 1.30am and the man made off on foot.

Meanwhile, a 40-year-old man is due to appear at Newry Magistrates Court today via videolink on a number of motoring charges.

The charges relate to an incident on Friday in the Ferryhill Park area of Newry where a driver struck the wall of a property and two police cars after failing to stop for police.

The man was also charged with two counts of dangerous driving, three counts of handling stolen goods, possessing article with blade or point in public place and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, relating to an incident on June 4, 2017 in which a police vehicle was rammed at the Edenappa Road area of Jonesborough.
