A young mother who died in a road crash in Co Tyrone loved life and idolised her five-year-old son, her funeral has heard.

Aimee Allen (23) died following a two-car collision on Monday afternoon on the Pomeroy Road near the village of Pomeroy.

A man, understood to have been a passenger in the black Vauxhall Vectra she was driving, was also critically injured.

A 64-year-old man driving the other car, a blue Seat Exeo, suffered minor injuries.

Ms Allen lived in Pomeroy but was originally from nearby Altmore and family and friends gathered yesterday there at the Church of the Immaculate Conception for Requiem Mass.

Fr David Moore said a "blackness descended" on Pomeroy and surrounding areas on Monday when news of Aimee's sudden death plunged the community "into sadness and grief".

"We today can only imagine how Aimee's family are feeling," he said.

"The awful numb pain of Aimee's death, and now a dark cloud of shock is hanging over you all.

"We never know what each new day will have in store for any of us. Life is so fragile and in the blink of an eye, so much can change.

"The Aimee that so many of us knew and loved was most certainly her own person, strong-willed and the essence of a daughter, partner, mother, sister, grand-daughter and friend."

Fr Moore said the young mother had been "loving life".

"Aimee was quite satisfied with the ordinary things in life," he said.

"She loved her music and she loved flowers. She enjoyed cooking as well. As we know from hearing her in here in the church on various occasions, she had a wonderful singing voice, a great talent and she loved to sing to Jake.

"Jake has been so very good these past days and he has been a very brave boy. Jake knows that his mummy is sleeping. She fell asleep on earth and went to visit her daddy in heaven."

Addressing the young boy, he added: "The angels in heaven are really special and they make us feel so safe. So mummy is now very safe.

"I'm really glad that you are going to keep a very special eye on daddy and make sure he is okay and you have so many friends in school as well who will be really good to you, play with you and help maybe on the days when you are feeling a bit sad."
