THREE men were arrested after a suspected paramilitary-style attack at Cloughfern Roundabout in Newtownabbey.

Detective Chief Inspector Dunny McCubbin said one suspect, aged 44, is believed to have been one of two men who ordered a third to attend the area to receive a beating shortly after midnight on Sunday.

A passing police patrol intervened and arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of assault and possession of an offensive weapon, and remained in custody last night.

Police said the victim, a 37-year-old man, was arrested a short time later following a further altercation and was subsequently charged to appear at Belfast Magistrates' Court at a later date in relation to disorderly behaviour, assault on police and possession of an offensive weapon.

A second suspect in the original attack, a 39-year-old-man, was arrested on Sunday afternoon and also remained in custody.

Mr McCubbin said: "We are continuing with our inquiries into this incident and would ask anyone with any information or anyone who drove past Cloughfern roundabout at the time of the assault and has dash-cam footage to contact detectives in Antrim."

Meanwhile, police believe a man targeted in a paramilitary-style shooting in Co Antrim on Friday night was ordered to the area "by appointment".

The man, in his 30s, was shot in both legs in the Station Road area of Greenisland, in the vicinity of the train station, just after 8pm.

He was taken to hospital with injuries to his lower legs.

Detective Chief Inspector Mary White said: “We believe at this time that the shooting was by appointment and that the man had been ordered to attend this location to be shot. This is totally barbaric and must stop.

"No-one deserves to have this happen to them and there is absolutely no justification for an attack like this in our communities. We must all work together to bring those responsible to justice and to stop this from happening to anyone else."

She appealed to anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area or has dash-cam footage to contact detectives on 101 or phone Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
