SINN Féin MPs have added a raft of overseas trips, including some dating back three years, to their Westminster register of financial interests.

West Belfast representative Paul Maskey last month registered eight foreign visits, two of which were taken in 2016.

South Down MP Chris Hazzard last month registered trips to China and the US taken in 2017 and Venezuela in 2018, while his Newry and Armagh counterpart Mickey Brady registered a 2016 trip to New York.

DUP MP Gregory Campbell said the spate of registrations raised questions about why Sinn Féin had not put the trips on record earlier.

In February, the East Derry MP initiated an investigation into a previous failure by Sinn Féin MPs to declare trips to Venezuela.

He contacted the Westminster watchdog after Chris Hazzard and Mickey Brady travelled to South America in 2018 and 2017, respectively – visits which were paid for in part with Venezuelan money but were not included not registered with Westminster.

"In light of that investigation it seems that in May, several months after the Commissioner (for Standards) confirmed her investigation, Sinn Féin MPs registered 21 separate trips on the register of interests at Westminster, stretching as far back as March 2016, when beforehand there had been very few registrations," Mr Campbell said.

A Sinn Féin spokesman said the party often undertook international visits to "promote the Irish peace process and to share the Irish experiences of conflict resolution and peace building".

“This is an important area of political work which, we hope, assists others in finding a negotiated avenue out of conflict – these visits are routinely publicised and never involve personal gain or advantage," the spokesman said.

“We recently consulted with the Westminster registrar and are happy to register all international travel.”

The Sinn Féin spokesman criticised the "hypocrisy from the DUP, given their track record on overseas visits".
