A young Derry man who was killed in a city centre dispute has been awarded a poignant posthumous honour by the college where he was studying to be a carpenter.

Jordan McConomy (19) died in hospital last September following what police described as an “altercation” at William Street in Derry’s city centre. The teenager, from Rossnagalliagh in the city, was returning home following a night out when the incident occurred.

A student at North West Regional College, Jordan was studying on a level three course to be a carpenter and joiner. In tribute to the 19-year-old victim, North West Regional College has presented his family with a posthumous award in his memory.

At the college’s annual awards ceremony at the Millennium Forum, Jordan’s sister, Zara accepted the award from the college’s head of training and skills, Karen Moore. A number of the teenager’s friends also attended the presentation.

The 19-year-old’s mother, Andrena McConomy said the award meant a lot to the family as it recognised and celebrated Jordan’s achievements.

“I am deeply moved that North West Regional College have decided to remember Jordan with this special award on a day when so many of his fellow students have also been awarded prizes,” she said.

College lecturer, Brian Glenn, who taught Jordan, said he was an exceptional student who was well liked. Mr Glenn said Jordan had a mature approach to his studies.

“I have no doubt with his talent and skill he would have gone far.

“The college would have liked to be giving the award to Jordan himself today. However, we are grateful to the McConomy family for allowing us the opportunity to remember and pay our respects to a special young man,” Mr Glenn said.
