Two PSNI officers have been “repositioned” pending the outcome of a Police Ombudsman investigation after a Co Armagh man was stuck on the head with a baton.

Aaron Beeton suffered a serious head injury outside a the Batcave Bar bar at William Street in Lurgan earlier this month.

The 28-year-old was struck on the head after police were called to the bar.

It has been claimed Mr Beeton, who was treated in hospital for his injuries, was acting as a peacemaker when he was struck.

The Police Ombudsman has launched an investigation into the incident which caused widespread anger in the town’s nationalist community.

A spokeswoman for the PSNI said: “Two officers have been repositioned pending the outcome of the PONI investigation.”

The Irish News understands the two repositioned officers were part of the PSNIs Tactical Support Group.

It is believed that batons used by the PSNI on the night have been seized by the Police Ombudsman.

Former Policing Board spokeswoman Dolores Kelly recently met with police to discuss the case.

“When we spoke to police I was happy that police recognise the damage they did in terms of police confidence,” she said.

“By all accounts this young man was a peacekeeper."
