THE PSNI has announced anyone applying for a firearm certificate will have to complete the process online.

Applicants can currently acquire a certificate via a written process but that will end from July 9.

The PSNI say the application process will be simplified by the move.

Assistant Chief Constable Alan Todd said: “We receive over 12,000 firearms applications each year with a growing majority of those now being completed online.  Having considered a range of factors including feedback from our users we now feel that the time is right to cease the paper application process from the 9 July 2018 onwards.

“Over the last 16 months the online system has demonstrated that it has the ability to significantly improve the end to end application process and provide further benefits for applicants in the future."
