Police in Bangor have arrested a man in connection with a paramilitary-style assault which saw a community worker beaten with hammers in front of his wife and children.

Aaron McMahon was attacked by a masked gang who broke into his house last Wednesday night.

Mr McMahon said he believed he was targeted for leading a campaign against UDA criminality in the Clandeboye area of the seaside town.

Around 200 people attended a rally in support of the community worker who had publicly criticised the UDA for placing paramilitary flags in the area and for trying to take over a July bonfire to benefit from council funding.

Last week a 32-year-old man was arrested "on suspicion of aggravated burglary" and later released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Police said officers from the 'Bangor Reactive Organised Crime' unit carried out searches in the area yesterday and arrested a man in his late 20s for questioning in relation to aggravated burglary.

It is believed that officers also called to the house of a second man who was not at home and are currently seeking to question him in relation to the investigation.
