A heavy police presence is visible at an anti-immigration protest taking place in Newtownabbey.

The gathering, involving some masked men, is being held at the Chimney Corner Hotel in Newtownabbey’s Antrim Road, and was earlier promoted on social media to be starting at 7pm on Wednesday.

Around 100 protestors had gathered by 7.30pm, as a large number of PSNI Land Rovers also amassed in the area.

The hotel has previously been the site for anti-immigration protests over it being used to house asylum seekers.

A German news crew was among media at the scene, while The Irish News was told it was “not wanted here” by one protestor.

Meanwhile, a crowd has blocked the Upper Malone Road in south Belfast as part of a protest, with several dozen people gathering close to the entrance to the Taughmonagh estate.

A planned protest at Belfast City Hall at 7pm did not materialise, with only three people turning up, while a police presence was maintained.

In east Belfast, crowds of young people in black have been spotted in the Newtownards Road area, close to where protestors gathered on Tuesday evening and where a Glider bus was hijacked and burnt out.

The protests this week follow a knife attack on a man in north Belfast on Monday night, for which a Sudanese man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder.
