Thousands of school pupils and college students will this month enjoy a myriad of activities designed to shine a light on the fun side of maths.

Maths Week Ireland, which is the biggest maths festival in the world, runs from October 15-23.

Universities, colleges, museums and schools throughout Northern Ireland are working together to deliver an exciting programme of events.

Hundreds of schools have registered online to join in Maths Week organising their own in-school events supported by ww.mathsweek.ie, which offers resources and ideas, competitions and challenges.

Maths is now the most popular A-level subject in the north. For two years in a row, maths has attracted the highest number of exam entries while other science subjects also remain popular, with a growth in participation among girls. Two out of every three entries in further maths achieved either an A* or A.

This mirrors the substantial growth in popularity of Maths Week among young people from the north.

Last year, almost 37,000 took part in activities, up from about 24,000 and 17,000 in the previous two years. In 2015, 229,000 people across Ireland north and south participated.

The week seeks to promote a positive image of maths, highlighting its importance in everyday life where numbers are all around.

Throughout, multi-talented maths educators and maths presenters will demonstrate a different side of their skills set as they use magic, card tricks, and amazing mathematical predictions to fascinate and educate young people about the core subject.

At Armagh Planetarium, Bubblz the Mathematical Clown from Bubbly Maths, will brings laughter and games to rich mathematical activities involving primary school children. Her shows involve a lot of audience interaction as pupils are encouraged to estimate and problem solve.

A `grand finale' - Maths in the City at the Ulster Museum in Belfast on Saturday October 22 - will bring a flavour of the Maths Week festival to the public as maths' star educators from home and abroad invite people to take part in a host of fun challenges.

The free event will involve national and internationally renowned mathematicians entertaining the public with mazes, maths magic, puzzles and card tricks both inside and outside the Ulster Museum.
