Thousands of students and schoolchildren are enjoying a myriad of mathematical activities designed to shine a light on the fun side of maths.

Universities, colleges, museums and schools are taking part in the biggest maths festival in the world, Maths Week Ireland.

Multi-talented maths educators from across Europe and the US are demonstrating a different side of their skills set as they use magic, card tricks, and amazing mathematical predictions to fascinate and educate young people about maths.

It seeks to promote a positive image of maths, highlighting its importance in everyday life where numbers are all around.

The week began in Derry with a maths trail including maths themed Minecraft and Lego workshops.

Other highlights include Doug Buchanan, wizard of the maths challenge, who will be back to intrigue and entertain students at Stranmillis University College, Armagh Planetarium and W5 while Bubblz the maths clown will bring Bubbly Maths to the Homework Club for schools in the Ulster Museum.

Education minister John O'Dowd said having a good grasp of numbers and maths was a crucial skill in the modern world.

"Maths is everywhere around us from working out travel distances, to telling the time, and calculating change in the shops," he said.

"It is the basis for developing higher-level thinking and analytical skills, and is fundamental to many careers, including engineering, programming and financial management. I am committed to ensuring that as many of our young people as possible have a level of numeracy that enables them to progress in today's world."
