A SOUTH Derry engineering firm is playing its part in the fight against Covid-19.

Draperstown-based Sperrin Metal Storage Solutions has remained open during the current crisis to fulfil orders from the NHS and Irish army.

The firm is well known in Co Derry and sponsored its Gaelic football team when it won the All-Ireland title in 1993.

Managing director Peter Gormley last night revealed how orders have flooded in to provide storage lockers for medical staff.

The lockers are designed to hold protective clothing and safely secure the belongs of hospital workers.

The company has also received an order to supply bedside units to the Irish army as part of its effort to defeat the deadly disease.

It is understood the firm received abusive phone call earlier this week because it had not closed.

Mr Gormley last night said “the only reason” the firm remained open was to help with Covid-19 related orders.

“We are more than happy to be of service,” he said.

“We are here to help.

“We are not doing unnecessary work, we are only doing front line work.”

Mr Gormely revealed that 180 locker that were originally destined for a hotel in England have now been redirected to the NHS.

“We have 110 staff and hope to keep 60 on to fulfil these orders and then we will be closing,” he said.
