JUST eight restaurants from the north have made it into a list of the top 100 eateries on the island.

The Sunday Times 100 best restaurants includes some of Belfast’s best known venues.

Both Michelin star rated Muddler’s Club and Ox, feature as does Niall McKenna’s well established James Street South restaurant. But this list also features Bia Rebel on the Ormeau Road and Stock Kitchen and Bar in George’s Market.

Soda & Starch in Derry, Lost & Found in Coleraine and Hillsborough’s Hara complete the short-list.

The list is a marked improvement from 2017, when just two restaurants from the north made the cut. The list is compiled by John and Sally McKenna of the well-known McKennas' guides, who along with a team of expert editors, “scoured the country looking for the best places to eat”, said Niall Toner, who edited the list.

“We think these awards are more appropriate, accurate and reflective of the Irish dining scene than their perhaps better-known international equivalents, such as the Michelin guide.

“In fact, having a Michelin Star will not automatically put you on our list, as you will quickly realise when you spot the absence of some of the country's most garlanded eating establishments.”
