Paddy O'Flaherty was a unique talent

Paddy O'Flaherty, who has died after a short illness at the age of 73, was among the best loved broadcasters and journalists of his generation.

From the start of his career with The Irish News, and all through his decades with the BBC in Belfast, Mr O'Flaherty had a unique ability to connect with his audience.

He possessed one of the most distinctive voices on the airwaves, and, regardless of the subject, brought authority and insight to every story he covered.

Mr O'Flaherty was also a talented violinist, who played a key role in increasing the popularity of country music, and his contribution will be sadly missed by his many admirers.
