A MAN has died following a two-car collision on the outskirts of Derry.

The victim passed away Altnagelvin hospital following the crash on the Glenshane Road at Drumahoe shortly after 8am yesterday. The man's Peugeot car was involved in a collision with a Skoda Superb.

A police spokeswoman said the driver of the Skoda was also removed to hospital as a precaution.

"Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or captured what occurred on their dash cam to get in touch with the collision investigation unity by calling 101," she said.

Part of Glenshane Road remained closed throughout yesterday with diversions in place.

Alliance councillor Philip McKinney, who came on the accident, yesterday morning described the news that one of the victims had died as "shocking".

"On behalf of the Alliance Party, I would like to offer my condolences to the family and friends of the man who died," he said.

Sinn Féin councillor Christopher Jackson also extended his sympathies and urged all drivers to take care on the roads.

In a separate development, a pensioner killed in a road accident on the main Derry to Letterkenny road was named as Mervyn McClure from Lurgy, Letterkenny.

Mr McClure, who was in his 70s, died when his van was involved in a three-vehicle collision between Newtowncunningham and Manorcunningham on Tuesday.
