A 29-year-old man who died following a single-vehicle collision near Coleraine has been named.

Reginald Diamond, from the Upperlands area of Co Derry, was the driver of a silver BMW which crashed on the Curragh Road close to Culcrow Primary School at around 6.30am on Saturday.

He was the only occupant and was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to Causeway Hospital, where his condition was described overnight as critical. He later died from his injuries.

The road was closed between the Bann Road and Coolyvenny Road for several hours.

Police appealed for anyone who was travelling on the Curragh Road on Saturday morning and witnessed the collision to contact officers in Coleraine on 101.

Friends of the victim took to social media to express their condolences.

"Wee young boy. Fly high. RIP Reggie," one wrote.

"So sad, RIP Reggie xx," said another.

The Curragh Road was also the scene of a fatal car crash this month.

Two weeks ago, 75-year-old Jim McCollum died after the Land Rover he was driving struck a tree.

Mr Diamond’s death brings the number of people who have died on roads in the north so far this year to 11.

A 52-year-old man died following a two-vehicle road collision in Ballywalter, Co Down on Friday morning.

Dean Weir, who was originally from Bangor, was the driver of a white Suzuki Alto that was involved in a collision with a blue Nissan Micra on the Dunover Road.
