BUILDING work has begun on a long-awaited new sports complex for Dungiven.

Sports Minister Carál Ní Chuilín and Dungiven athlete Ryan O'Connor yesterday cut the first sod at the site of the £2.8m Co Derry facility.

Mr O'Connor, who had both his legs amputated following a heart transplant, helped lead the campaign for the new complex on Curragh Road.

The scheme had been discussed for years but the Unionist-dominated Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council twice rejected plans for the development amid rows over funding.

The decision sparked protests from people in the area and politicians.

The project finally got the go-ahead at a council meeting last month.
