MIDLANDER Robbie McCarthy has quite a bit to go yet to be described as the ‘new Paul Brady’, but he is heading in the right direction.

When Brady completed the Perfect Ten All-Ireland Men’s 40×20 Senior Singles Championship titles, and said that was enough, McCarthy stepped in to win the crown in 2014 and at the weekend completed a hat-trick, at Kingscourt.

He completed his treble as he defeated Charly Shanks for the second year running, holding on to the honours in two games, 21-13, 21-7.

However, there was no treble for Aisling Reilly as she surrendered her crown to her great rival Catriona Casey, after three games.

McCarthy and Shanks played a thriller last year with the former winning a tie-breaker 21-20 by claiming the last five points.

The 2016 final was not as enthralling, although both games were close in the early stages but the holder was always able to find another gear and run off a string of aces with corner kills his speciality.
