Bowls: Cookstown clubs are out of sorts in Club Championship

DESPITE their tall reputations, Cookstown clubs failed to sizzle in the Galway Boy Hotel-sponsored IIBA Club Championship last weekend.

Record five-times winners Cookstown Parochial were well-fancied to retain the title but were under pressure in their opening game against Michelin. The latter were six shots ahead with only two ends remaining but their opponents gained a two-shot victory with their final delivery.

The Parochial side then defeated Wellington to reach the section final but met their Waterloo against an aggressive Sydenham outfit who romped home by 16 shots. The losers were also out of luck in the plate competition when they were overwhelmed 29-5 by Strabane Cricket Club.

Cookstown High, twice trophy winners, also had a day to forget. They went down by 24 shots to Strabane Cricket Club and were also eliminated from the plate competition by Cloughreagh who sealed a place in the semis.

Loughenreagh also booked a last four spot in the premier competition by defeating 1st Ahoghill by six shots.
