Hagger's the European Master

Ray McLean

JOEL HAGGER was crowned SMPT European Masters champion at Herentals, Belgium last weekend.

The Swede, a member of his country's World Cup winning team, defeated Foyle's Gary Moore by nine shots in the final. However, the winning margin didn't reflect the titanic struggle in the earlier stages when the scores were tied after six ends.

Moore was unlucky on several occasions over the concluding ends but his opponent was always in command and fully deserved his success. In the semis, the Irish player defeated the host country's Sibe Lowreys while Hagger overcame England's Paul Pomeroy who had ended the hopes of defending champion Mark Beattie also from Foyle.

Meanwhile, Western's ladies booked their place in the second round of the IIBA McIlroy Cup when they travelled to East Antrim and won by 19 shots.

North Eastern hosted Northern and triumphed 58-53 while West Down defeated visitors South Down. In the rearranged second game, Oriel travelled to Mid Down and won by 27 shots.

The Irish Bowls Coaching Association is holding an assistant coaching course at Ballybrakes IBC on Wednesday, November 25 and Wednesday, December 2 from 7-10pm.

The cost is £20 per person and anyone interested should contact club secretary Donna McCloy by e-mail secretary.ballybrakescibc@gmail.com or mobile 07764 469006 or the coaching secretary Helen Russell by e-mail Helen@e-russell.com.
