Gary Carson: Quatrain can follow Mataariki to success at Gowran Park

Henry de Bromhead’s charge can claim mile fillies’ maiden

A win for Mataariki in the fillies’ race would be a nice boost to the chances of Quatrain half-an-hour later at Gowran Park on Wednesday night.

Henry de Bromhead’s charge chased home that rival on her debut over course and distance last month and can go one better now in the mile fillies’ maiden.

She looked to bump into a smart sort then in Mataariki and ran a nice race herself to stay on in the runner-up spot.

With that outing under her belt the Mastercraftsman filly should be capable of stepping forward now and making a mark for herself.

She is a half-sister to several winners, including Group Two winner Viztoria. This looks like a nice chance now to gain valuable winning brackets.

It’s not a bad maiden on paper to be fair and Clever And Cute is an obvious danger having also been second on her sole start to date.

She was also second over course and distance on debut, a fortnight ago, when behind a decent enough yardstick in Chicago Fireball.

Jessica Harrington has her yard in flying form and Magical Bay is a potential improver in the field.

The New Bay filly was fourth on her only start last season at Down Royal.

Quatrain looks to have a nice bit of potential though and gets the vote.

In the preceding nine-furlong fillies’ event Joseph O’Brien has found a nice stepping stone for Mataariki.

She looked a smart prospect when scoring on her debut here last month, beating the aforementioned Quatrain.

The Cracksman filly did things very smoothly then and O’Brien talked highly of her afterwards.

With stakes races being mentioned after that win it would be disappointing if she couldn’t follow up now in a race where the highest official mark is 79.

O’Brien can also strike in the mile maiden with Thequietman.

This Farhh gelding was runner-up on his debut at Leopardstown last month and looks to have found a winnable opportunity now.

It was a nice run to chase home the well-backed Ecureuil Secret then in what looked like a strong enough contest.

The winner went on to finish fourth in Listed company at the Curragh so the form looks solid.

Thequietman looks to have less on his plate now on his second outing and should get his head in front.

Denis Hogan saddles three in the opening claimer and Roderick looks on a nice weight in the nine-furlong contest. He comes here off the back of a decent run in handicap company at Leopardstown recently.
