DOWN’S two-goal hero Aisling Cull was only too delighted to help her side in any way in their Ulster JFC final victory over Fermanagh at the weekend.

Cull was only on the field when her first touch saw her connect with the ball, palming it the net after a pass across the square from Viv McCormack in the 37th minute.

It was a crucial score in their 3-8 to 1-8 win over the Erne  county as it gave them the lead for the first time in the game.

The Carryduff player was not done yet, adding a point as well before she finished off with a second goal seconds from the end to ensure the silverware was going to the Mourne ladies.

“I think when you come off the bench, you have to try and make an impact and try and earn your place,” said the 28-year-old.

“It’s really a competitive squad to try and break into the starting team, so if I can get any minutes at all I’m willing to give what it takes.”

She admits she was in the right place at the right time for the first goal and for the second, with the game stretched as Fermanagh went in search of an equalising goal, the goal chance was on and she took it.

“It was a bit of luck that I just got on the end of, I think it was Viv who played a ball across the square, so just got on the end of it,” she said.

“Fermanagh really put it to us so we needed that goal at that time to turn the game on its head and try to come on top.

“I think we realised what a threat Blaithin Bogue is for Fermanagh and you see she got the golden boot for top scorer. We tried to keep her at bay today and we came out the right side of it, so we are happy enough.”

The All-Ireland Junior campaign is now just weeks away from beginning and for Cull and Down, reaching the final and getting the chance to get back to intermediate level is the goal.

“It was a real blow for us last year, getting relegated down to the junior ranks, so we are just trying our best now to get back up into intermediate,” she said.
